The RFBR Playlist
Hola, bitches. We’re compiling the ultimate running playlist and want to hear what your most motivational running music is.
Is there something that always spurs you on at the end of your run, or gets you going when you feel like hitting the dirt? Do you always manage to push your way through another gruelling five minutes if you have the dulcet tones of Rihanna/Bon Jovi/Hot Chip (delete/add as appropriate) in your ear? Then let us and the rest of your RFBR comrades know.
Below is our Top 10 to get you going, but please comment away and we’ll add any song that receives more than three recommendations to what we hope will become the blueprint for the best running playlist EVER.
Top 10
Run the World (Girls) - Beyoncé
Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
Bonkers – Dizzee Rascal
I Need a Hero – Bonnie Tyler
Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – The Proclaimers
Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey
Running up that Hill – Kate Bush
Chariots of Fire - Vangelis
Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon

Oooh…it’s got to be ‘I Want To Break Free’ by Queen. I’m firmly in the power ballad camp on this one.
I like to add a Grit Doctor bonus when I try and sing along. Less Freddie Mercury and more Lily Savage.
Always found ‘Flashdance – What a Feeling’ and ‘Fame’, both by Irene Cara, got us fired up for the fast bits in aerobics classes! (Don’t run – prefer walking!)
What about Everybody’s Free (to feel good) Rozalla
Hey Zoe!! Great tune – how are things in Switzerland? All good here, the twins are 1 now and still a handful! Keep in touch and lots of love to you all xxxxxx
God, that time flew! When was there birthday? Also, you have a private email address? Wanna send something to mine?
xxx
to you all
Z
whoops typo their birthday!
I just wrote a long one back and it didn’t seem to work – am still trying to navigate my way around my own blog and only just picked up your msg. ruthfield@hotmail.com
The twins turned 1 on 22nd september – the longest year of my life – Olly and I celebrate our 2nd anniversary on the 24th October! Unbelievable. Hope all is well your end and the boys are well and happy. So much love. x
Greta blog Ruth!
What a lightweight list of muisic though…
What about ‘Firestarter’, ‘Hell Aint a Bad Place to Be’, and a classic by J Richman and the Modern Lover’s – ‘Icrecream Man’!
You’ve got me running now Ruth. I manage a lazy 6 kms 3 times a week. Left buttock is down to 15 kg and right side trailing at 17…
Great that you are running Simon! Me too and loving it…sadly Olly is still apparently stuck to the sofa….
White Lies – Farewell to the Fairground is a fantastic running track “Keep on running, keep keep on running, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home”. It always gives me an extra boost and makes me go extra fast – great for speed training. I much prefer to run with music, it helps my mind to go blank and a good tune can make me go much faster than I would without music. I’ve had a few runs in the past where my ipod has stopped working halfway through a run and I panic!!
Queens of the Stone Age – No one knows is a good one as well, something to do with the rhythm, but maybe that’s just me and also Razorlight – Stumble and Fall.
I nominate the Jason Nevins remix of NERD’s Rosckstar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvRCCj5Ffxs
well, you surely can’t go past ‘Mitsubitchi’ by the Subs? Only problem is it makes me want to dance, not run!
The pretender – Foo Fighters
I feel you – Depeche Mode
Icky thump – The White Stripes
… To name a few of my motivational choons
Crossroads – Cream
Cocaine – Yakooza
Sweat – Snoog Dogg
Tusk – Fleetwood Mac
Oh yeah, and Breathe by Prodigy
I don’t need the word ‘run’ anywhere in the song’s lyrics (mostly because I’m still in the walking phase of the programme), but anything happy and upbeat gets the tempo up, as well as keeping me cheerful. So my musical taste has taken a huge dive as my new playlist includes Katy Perry (Hot ‘n’ Cold), Rihanna (Only Girl), Bruno Mars (Marry You) and a worryingly long list of Glee covers. Still, whatever works…
Eminem “Lose Yourself” –
“Look. If you had. One shot. One opportunity. To seize everything you ever wanted. One moment. Would you capture it? Or let it slip?”
An all-time favourite of mine, had forgotten that song! Used to listen to it before interview/exams for added grit factor, thanks for reminding me of it…
It has to be Scatman, really makes me go for it and always cheers me up!
Hi Ruth
Still running thanks to your book getting me started on 9th January. I managed 10.6km on Sunday – woo hoo! Still smiling, still out 3+ times a week and loving it
Toons to inspire legs to keep turning:-
“Push It” by Salt’n'Peppa
“Move Every Mountain” by The Shamen
“Can U Dig It” by The Mock Turtles
“She Bangs the Drums” by The Stone Roses
“Do What You Like” by Take That (pumping tuune!!)
All good motivators and up-beat inspirations…
thats amazing well done – i love that salt n peppa tune! x
NO question – it HAS to be Matthew Wilder’s 80 classic ‘Break My Stride’ – check out this hilarious performance of it…genius
classic – just watched and listened with my husband! x
Cool Post
Coming home – puff daddy….footloose….and rebel yell – billy idol…
God is a dj – faithless
Running by Evermore – “, Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun – “We are just running for the thrill of it, thrill of it, always pushing up the hill, searching for for the thrill of it.”
Ruthie, I just discovered your blog. Baby, this is the only running mix you and your acolytes will ever need…
Primetime of your life: Daft Punk (has to be from the Alive live album)
Touch it / Technologic: Daft Punk (likewise has to be from the Alive live album)
Flute Loop: Beastie Boys
Paper Planes: M.I.A.
I lust you: Neon Neon
Age of Love
We are your Friends: Justice vs. Simian Mobile Disco
DVNO: Justice
Pogo: Digitalism
If you can’t do a sub 45 minute 10k to that, then can I recommend darts…
xx
I needed some inspiration running and downloading new music always helps, so here they are
1 – Return of the Mack by Mark Morrison
2 – Bangarang by Skrillex (such an good song to get you pumped up!)
Rocky theme song, no matter how hard the run feels it makes me want to punch my fists into the air, raise my head and feel like a winner cause I am actually running! Sometimes I give in to the feeling and let out a loud whoop of exhillaration but only when I am running in the bush and there’s no one to critique me.
Michael Sembello: Maniac (from Flashdance) – Just use it as your power song in the end of your run, it will work!
I’m Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO keeps me moving – but that might be because I’m only 4 weeks into this and my Inner Bitch sings “I’m Lardy and I Know It”!
